As you can see, there is some debate on charging. there really shouldn't be. most posters apparently have never seen a hydrometer http://www.jcwhitney.com/jcwhitney/texts鈥?/a>

Here is how to use one http://www.ehow.com/how_5011069_use-hydr鈥?/a>

Here is the difference between wet cell batteries http://windsun.com/Batteries/Battery_FAQ鈥?/a> Starting, Marine, and Deep-Cycle Batteries

now you might have a better idea what to buy. Get the best you can afford. I suggest a true deep cycle battery, but the smallest group possible. I'm assuming you have a transom of some sort for your motor, and 8 ft is good size, possible a sit on top? Neat. If you have to make a battery holder, be mindful of the exposed terminals.

The reason that I gave you all of this information is to help you make the best choice for your hard earned money. also, with proper maintenence you can get the most out of the least amount of money and weight.

You want a deep-cycle marine battery, that matches up to the amp-hour rating on the motor. You can get them at basspro, cabellas, *****, etc, and the weight is comparable to a car battery. Look at the motor, and there should be a tag with the info you need to find the correct battery. You will also need to get a battery box, with a strap, as it is the law in most states to have the battery in a case. If you need further info, I would suggest going to Bassresource.com, and look through the forums and articles for more answers. It is a great site with more info than you can ever use.I have a 8ft pontoon raft, just got a Minn Kota 30 , what kind of battery should i get. Weight is an issue?
Have a' 11' 1/2" raft, sportin' a Motor Guide Transom Mount and all we ever use is the Qptima D34M Blue Top. The performance of these batteries along with the weight (43.5lbs) made me a' believer. Their a' bit co$tly but believe me they be well worth the dollar$. Have givin' ya' links for not only the battery but, a hand held battery meter so one can keep up with where their sittin' on the charge (a must when the electric troller be your only source of power;)...%26lt; * { {{ %26gt; %26lt;

Youll have to have at least a 12 volt battery. A riding lawnmower battery will work just fine but wont last near as long as a small car battery.
Call or go by your local dealer and ask them. They will know for sure.
