Trolling battery for inflatable boat?

I have an inflatable boat, Seahawk II, with a 30lb thrust Minn Kota and am trying to select the best option that makes good economic sense. I bought the boat setup to be portable and cheap and now it is down to the battery, It looks like about 100+ amp/hrs would be good to me.

It seems the wet cell (lead acids) are the cheapest, I figure if I put it in a battery case it will run me about $145 and should be safe if I am careful.

The AGM battery seems to offer benefits of fully enclosed (no acid spills on an inflatable sounds good) and if I bring it towards a zero charge it can handle the abuse better than wet cell. However the battery alone seems to be over $200.

What details am I missing? Can someone with marine battery knowledge give me advice for this situation?Trolling battery for inflatable boat?
Use a wet cell no real problems. You MUST get a deep discharge batt or it will be ruined after a few uses, or get a good guaranteed, say its in your car(only) and exchange it often.Trolling battery for inflatable boat?
For your situation I'd go with the GelCell battery. It's safer for you. You'll never need to worry whether it tipped over, upside down or any way. This is a problem that happens with inflatables. Batteries get tossed around a bit since they sit freely. AGM's are a good secondary choice. Yes, they cost more, but you're buying safety and not just a battery too.Trolling battery for inflatable boat?

now you might have a better idea what to buy. Get the best you can afford. I suggest a true deep cycle battery, but the smallest group possible. I'm assuming you have a transom of some sort for your motor, and 8 ft is good size, possible a sit on top? Neat. If you have to make a battery holder, be mindful of the exposed terminals.

The reason that I gave you all of this information is to help you make the best choice for your hard earned money. also, with proper maintenence you can get the most out of the least amount of money and weight.

  • Do I need a rheostat or "POT" and which one?

I have a busted minn kota e-drive on a 2003 escape cruz electric deck boat. This is a 48 volt trolling motor rated a 2hp not sure how many amps it draws. The lower unit is working as I have hooked it up directly to a battery. And the electronic control cable works as I have found continuity on all 11 pins. I want to eliminate the mother board and electronic throttle control and replace it with a rheostat or pot for speed control. I think the mother board might be the problem but there is no way for me to test it as it has that hard black silicone. The only other component I have not tested because of lack of know how is a 4 terminal solenoid that seems to be connected for the key ignition. Please any ideas to get this running again will be appreciated. I am also able to email pics if needed. ThanksDo I need a rheostat or "POT" and which one?
It would be a rheostat but it would be large, difficult to buy and very wasteful of energy. It seems likely the speed controller but may not be expensive. I would recommend contacting the supplier and their service for a quote. As you say it cannot be fixed readily, it is a replacement part, just like it would be for a car. Don't try to diagnose it for them, it may end up misleading.

Electric trolling motors vs. gas trolling motor?

    I have a canoe with a square stern. http://www.pelicansport.com/index.php?la鈥?/a>

I was considering a 4 hp Tohatsu/Nissan, Yamaha, Suzuki or maybe a 5 hp Honda or Tohatsu/Nissan. My dealer says in all cases, the 4 or 5 hp motors will not be able to break the hull speed barrier. The 40 or 50 lb thrust Minn Kota should be able to match the performance of the 4 hp gas engines. Is this true. Thanks.Electric trolling motors vs. gas trolling motor?
they will perform close to each other the 4 hp gas outboards might have a little more power than a 50 ft pound trolling motor. the weight of the battiers will make up for the weight of the outboard so its up to you. do you want gas or electric? remember the battiers take up extra room how much room do you have?

Please help me choose between 46lb thrust and 55lb thrust trolling motor?

I want to install a trolling motor for my 10' fishing boat weight at about 70lb. My choices are Minn Kota Endura 46 ($230-$50 rebate) and 55 ($250-$60 rebate). The price gap is so small that the 55 model is very attractive. But it may drain battery power a lot faster than the 46 model. Does it worth to buy a 55 model? And if I use low speed setting, can I extend the running time? Thanks! Please help me choose between 46lb thrust and 55lb thrust trolling motor?
The 46 lb. will be more then you will ever need on the boat I'm using a 41 lb thrust trolling motor on my 16 foot boat with a 60 horse power motor on it and it is more then enough for it. Be sure that if you get the 55 lb thrust it is not a 24 volt model or you will need to buy two batteries for it . to answer the last question the battery drain will be minimum on the low setting.
To figure out how long a battery will last,do the following.

First you want a marine deep cycle battery. Marine deep cycle batteries are rated by AmpHours. Find the Amps of the two motors you mentioned, then by dividing the Amp Hours of the battery by the Amps of the motor, you will find how long the battery should last.IE: 200 Amp Hour Battery/ 34 Amp Motor = 5.88 Hours

You may find that the 55 uses the same Amperage or you may need just a slightly bigger battery for the 55 to get the same hours.

Remember use of things like power trim and lift and steering, all effect the life of the battery too. And yes slower speeds will extend the battery some. The amp rating on the motor is amps at full power under normal running conditions. Please help me choose between 46lb thrust and 55lb thrust trolling motor?
For $10 go for the bigger one. You never know what boat you might put it on in the future.

Yes it will draw more power, but turned down and used intelligently it will last a long time. With no noticeable difference to the other one.
you don't need the extra power for just a 10' boat. The 46 will be more than enough and yes the larger one will draw more juice. Please help me choose between 46lb thrust and 55lb thrust trolling motor?
well a 46 lb thrust is plenty for your weight of boat, but the 55 is a better deal
You don't need the extra power, and yes it draws more current.

Seveylor Super Caravelle XR 116 vs. Intex Excursion 5 raft?

The Sevylor is 12'x5'4" has an 1100 lbs capacity and weighs 39 lbs.

The Intex is 12'x5'6" has a capacity of 880 lbs, weighs 51 lbs and the vinyl is 30 gauge thickness. The Sevylor thickness is unknown, but presumed to be similar, maybe slightly less due to 12 lbs weight difference.

Anybody have experience with either? Probably will row 50% of the time or use our Minn Kota Endura 40 electric trolling motor mainly on lakes or rivers, generally within 500 yards of shore. Thanks.Seveylor Super Caravelle XR 116 vs. Intex Excursion 5 raft?
I have an Intex excursion 4 and it is very heavy duty. If you are rowing and beaching it I would go with the thicker gauge vinyl, it will resist ripping better and be stronger at the oar locks, as well as the motor mount points. I have done all this with mine and have had no issues with rocky shores. Unless you need the extra capacity - short of contacting Seveylor, I would go with the one that publishers their thickness. Like you said the weight is probably the difference in thickness and the SEV probably has bigger air chambers, leading to the higher capacity, and potentially less interior space for the same size.

  • Outboard motor weight (for max weight capacity on my boat)?

i was wondering what a rough estimate for the weight of my 7.5 hp, 2 stroke ted williams outboard would be, im not very accurate with judging weight by hand, but maybe someone has an old catalog with more info, or maybe someone just flat out knows more than i do. i use a minn kota trolling motor with a 12V deep cycle battery to power it now, so i was wondering if the weight of the motor would be comparable to the weight of the battery, considering that the battery feels pretty heavy.Outboard motor weight (for max weight capacity on my boat)?
Basically an Eska, as sold through Sears. Just with a signature for marketing purposes. Weight compared to a trolling motor and battery(s) probably similar, but power output much higher - don't overpower your boat!Outboard motor weight (for max weight capacity on my boat)?
Like most older outboard engines, they are usually heavier than they look. There isn't much information on Ted Williams outboard motors, especially without knowing what year the motor was manufactured.

If I were you I would save myself some time and frustration by simply weighing the motor, place it on a scale, then you'll know for sure. If you have a regular bathroom stand on scale try this. Stand on your scale record your weight. After that stand on your scale while holding the motor an record that weight. Do the math, you'll know how heavy you motor is.

Best of luck to you!Outboard motor weight (for max weight capacity on my boat)?
probably very close to the same.

but as suggested, just whip out the bathroom scale and know EXACTLY in a few seconds.

BTW, with roughly 100 lbs of thrust per hp, your power to weight ratio SUCKS.

and the cost of replacement batteries every few years, the hassle of charging them (especially on longer camping trips), the limited run time of even a good new battery, the weight of them, a small outboard is so much convient, powerful and hassle free.

merc's 2.5 hp outboard weighs 40 lbs, puts out the equilivant power of about five 50 lb thrust trolling motors, will run all day long at full throttle on a small tank of gas, that gas tank can be "recharged" just about everywhere, including at the waters edge at many places, and will last 30+ years with proper maintence.

and only costs about twice what a good trolling motor and deep cycle battery does.
I don't have a precise answer for that particular motor, but I have no doubt that it's at least 45 lbs and under 60, probably under 55. The deepcycle battery, depending on size, will be around 50 lbs.

Which is most efficient current to recharge a battery from a gas generator?

I have a 2000 surge watt/ 1500 running watt gas generator that puts out both AC and DC power. I use this generator strictly to recharge 12 volt marine batteries on my sailboat. Currently, due to noise, I usually set the generator around 100' from the boat where ever I beach for a night, and recharge the batteries using the AC power outlet and a Minn Kota MK105P battery charger. I'm wondering if it would be more efficient to recharge my batteries off the DC outlet? And would the 100' distance from the generator to the battery make it less efficient?Which is most efficient current to recharge a battery from a gas generator?
first thing you have to consider is the DC voltage of the generator and the the voltage of your batteries. Second thing is the DC current output of your generator.

Then you need to consider the recommended charging current of you batteries. I am assuming they are deep cell batteries not regular automotive batteries and your charger has a deep cell setting.

You also need to consider that most battery chargers back off as the batteries charge up where a generator's output is since that it will continue delivering full current to the batteries even after they are charged up. That will fry your batteries. It is like using a high Amp. booster charger on your batteries even after they are charged.

As far as 100' yeah you will have a little voltage deep.

If I was you I'd keep on using the charger if it has a deep cell setting so you don't hammer your batteries with excessive charging current.

If your charger doesn't have a deep cell setting I'd recommend you get a battery that can be set for deep cell batteries.

How much do you think my trolling motor and battery are worth?

I want to sell my trolling motor and marine battery. I'm thinking 100 bucks for both. The motor is about ten years old, in excellent running condition(but looks obviously used), and the Marine battery is about 2 years old and has been used twice.

Motor: Minn Kota Endura 40, 40 lb thrust

Battery: Everstart Maxx-29, 875/675 (This is one heavy battery).

I will not be going on Ebay, but opting to put them in the front yard with a for sale sign. How much do you think my trolling motor and battery are worth?
    Blu-

The minn kota is prolly worth 50 bucks and the battery is a tough sell. The Everstart is made by Delphi, who makes a good battery, buuuut this one is kind of a dual purpose battery, which isn't necessarily a good thing. If one knows his battery's, they would be reluctant to buy anything used. Most people have no idea how to maintain a battery properly.

Not sure your front yard is a good place to sell. I would try Craig's list.. list it at100 bucks, its a little much, but remember, you can always go down in price, but never come up.How much do you think my trolling motor and battery are worth?
um marine battery over 12 months old = worthless.....trolling motor worth money only if it works and u can still get parts for it....

but 100 bucks sounds reasonable for working trolling motor.....but would depend on the the size...since u can get small ones new for 150 or so....

I plan to mount a 34 lbs thrust electric trolling motor on my 15'6" long, 37" beam canoe?

and I wonder if this is enough power? My friend has a 17'5" long, 38" beam canoe with a Minn Kota Endura 50. I have to say, this canoe moves fast, even set to 4 (out of 5) it is no problem covering what is known to be a mile, in about 15 minutes (4mph). I plan on using an Endura 34. Do you think I will be able to cruise anywhere near 4 mph? Even going against the wind or current, my friend can make 4 mph if he sets it to 5. Seems 4 mph is the maximum speed of the hull, maybe 4.5 mph. Thanks.I plan to mount a 34 lbs thrust electric trolling motor on my 15'6" long, 37" beam canoe?
You are correct in thinking that there is a max hull speed for your canoe. Your friend reaches the hull speed on his canoe at a thrust level of 4. In your case your canoe is slightly shorter, so you might have a hull speed of 3.8 So the question becomes can you reach that hull speed with the lower thrust motor. I don't know for sure but I'd bet you will be close. Good luck!I plan to mount a 34 lbs thrust electric trolling motor on my 15'6" long, 37" beam canoe?
I have a 17'6" canoe fitted with a Minn Kota 34 lb thrust trolling motor. With a good battery and charged up, I can get 3.4 mph. The shorter canoe is probably lighter also. You will get more than 3.4 MPH. I lose .2 or .3 mph against the wind and gain .2 or .3 mph with the wind. I can travel 7 miles with no really noticeable loss of power.

HOW DOES A PORTABLE TROLLING MOTOR BATTERY CHARGER WORK?

I am looking at buying a Minn Kota 1820110 MK-110P Portable 10 Amp Charger

and I would like to know where the charger gets its energy from. Do you always have to plug it into a wall? I cannot find an answer otherwise. There are no specifications on the web as to what the power source of the charger is. It would be nice to know before I buy. I am going to buy a battery and need to know what type of charger I will need to keep it maintained.HOW DOES A PORTABLE TROLLING MOTOR BATTERY CHARGER WORK?
You need a 110-120 Volt 15 amp receptacle for this charger. Any household receptacle will do. For it to operate it will always need to either be plugged into a wall receptacle OR an inverter receptacle capable of producing 10 amps at 110-120 volts. The latter is usually a waste as it takes 12 volts to produce the inverter voltage and there is some current loss, so you might as well just use the battery power if you can. If that were the only way to get your battery charged, it could be feasible.

As for batteries, I'd use a deep cycle trolling battery as thay have the ability to accept deep discharge cycles and then be charged back to full capcity many times. Normal marine batteries do not do that well, the plates get sulfated fast and they quit accepting charges sooner.

Good luck and enjoy boating!HOW DOES A PORTABLE TROLLING MOTOR BATTERY CHARGER WORK?
the charger will need a 110 volt input to work properly. I suspect that is the designation on the Minn Kota MK - 110P, 110 volt portable.

What is the value of an 1980 Glasstream bass boat? ( what would you pay?)?

The outboard motor on the transom is a 60HP Johnson Evinrude Triumph. The sale would include the bow mounted, foot controlled trolling motor along with a nearly brand new Minn Kota transom mount trolling motor as well. Some of the other extras would be the Eagle Fish Finder, 18lb river anchor with rope, life vests, Transom prop for motor while in transport, tie downs, side bumpers for docking, the dog ear setup for land running and a couple other things. Some of the work done is as follows: New pressure treated plywood decking, new carpet, new live well pump and bilge pump, new gas tank and fuel lines, new battery, new wiring on boat and trailer to include new lighting on trailer, new water lines for pumps, new plugs in motor, new distributor in motor, new fuel pump on motor, new bearing buddies on trailer wheels. I wanna know what you would pay for this?

How many amps for my Boat motor?

Hello, I am looking at Minn Kota Endura 50 42" Trolling Motor. How many amps on a battery do I need? from my personal experience ,I'd buy the best ,most powerful marine battery that would fit in space you have alloted for it, and a trickle charger could charge it for you when not in use.. a slow charge is most efficient anywayHow many amps for my Boat motor?
The Minn Kota is a fresh water only so it's not made with corrosion resistant material. a Single 27 or 31 group deep cycle battery will last quite a while. Get a 6 amp charger. and a Solar panel for the boat so when your sailing it can charge some of the power back into it.

50 lb Thrust Motor on a Intex Excursion?

I am going to buy an Intex Excursion inflatable boat. On average I'll have about 400 lbs on the boat although at times I may have up to 700 lbs onboard. What size motor would be sufficient to travel at a decent, non-crawling speed? It's solelyI was thinking of getting a 50 lb thrust Minn-Kota. There's 30lb and 40lb also for sale, the 30lb is significantly less money. Thanks!50 lb Thrust Motor on a Intex Excursion?
just as a reference, 100 lbs of thrust is about equal to what 1 hp can produce.

trolling motors, even on very light vessels with little drag resistance and a fresh strong battery will never push you at much more then 3 or 4 mphs.

having used nothing but trolling motors before myself, on a lake, even the 30 would be be able to push you about 1 mile in 10-20 minutes, depending on wind. 50 would definetly be more effective when the wind is against you, but wouldnt greatly change your speed and travel time otherwise.

however, on creeks and rivers, i would want more rather then less. you got current to fight, and especially if going on a weakened by the trip down current trip back upstream, you will NEED power to overcome the current and still move up river.

a 2.5 mercury outboard brand new runs about $750. that would have teh rough equivilant power of FIVE 50 lb thrust trolling motors at full throttle.

it would burn small amounts of gas and need more maintence then the trolling motor, but it wont eat deep cycle batteries, and can last 30+ years if properly maintained.

some models of inflatable rafts can be used with SMALL outboards just as easily as they can be used with trolling motors. and scanoes, which cant be popped, are canoes with a flat rear end meant for mounting a small motor of some sort.

Thanks for your help :)Buying a small boat without papers?
Let's see what New York has to say on the subject...

    Boats

Does my boat require a registration?

The law requires you to register any boat that is motor-driven and is operated on public waterways in NYS. The boat requires a registration even if the motor is not the primary source of propulsion. If you operate the boat in NYS, you must register the boat with the DMV. After you register your boat, you receive a registration certificate that indicates the registration number assigned to your boat and a set of registration stickers.

You must paint or attach the registration number to each side of the bow of the boat. The characters must be:

block letters not less than three inches high,

a color different from the hull and easy to see,

legible from 100 ft. away during the daylight hours,

the only number on the front half of your boat.

You cannot transfer the registration number to another boat.

The registration sticker shows the month and the year that the registration expires. Attach each sticker in line with the registration numbers on each side of the hull, and three inches toward the stern of the boat.

What if my boat is documented by the US Coast Guard?

You must register the boat in NYS if:

the boat is not used for commercial purposes in NYS, and

the boat will be used on public waterways in NYS for 90 or more consecutive days.

See the information about boat registration requirements. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader庐. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader庐, see these instructions.

If your boat was documented by US Coast Guard, you do not receive a NYS registration number. You receive NYS registration stickers only. Attach the stickers in the position where the registration numbers are normally located.

How do I get a hull identification number (HIN)?

If you have a boat that does not have a hull identification number (HIN), you must get one before you can register the boat if:

    you made the boat

you got a boat that was manufactured after November 1, 1972.

You can get an application form from the DMV or from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). Send the completed form to the OPRHP. The OPRHP arranges your boat inspection for you. Visit the OPRHP web site.

    Do boats require title certificates?

The DMV issues title certificates for boats that are:

    model year 1987 and newer,

at least 14 ft. long, and

    registered in New York State.

The title certificate is used for proof of ownership for these boats instead of the registration. Title certificates are not issued for boats that do not match the description above or for boats registered with the Coast Guard. For a boat that does not receive a title certificate, the transferable registration is proof of ownership.

How do I register my boat?

See the information about boat registration requirements. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader庐. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader庐, see these instructions.

To register your boat, bring the following items to a DMV office:

Complete form MV-82-B (Boat Registration / Title Application).

Complete form DTF-802 (Statement of Transaction for Sales Tax) or proof of exemption or tax paid. The requirements and forms for boats are the same as those for motor vehicles. See the information about sales tax.

The proof of ownership listed in the boat registration requirements document.

Proof of identity and date of birth.

Cash, check or credit card for the fee.

Remember that if you have a boat trailer you must register the trailer. See the instructions to register a vehicle.

What is the cost of a boat registration?

Boat registrations are issued for three years. There is a registration fee and a surcharge for boating safety. The fees and surcharges are calculated from the length of the boat as follows:

Less than 16 feet - $18.00 registration fee and $3.00 surcharge ($21.00 total).

16 feet to less than 26 feet - $36.00 registration fee and $10.00 surcharge ($46.00 total).

26 feet or longer - $60.00 registration fee and $15.00 surcharge ($75.00 total).

How do I renew my boat registration?

You cannot renew a boat registration on-line. Use your renewal notice to renew by mail. If you do not have a renewal notice, apply for the renewal with form MV-82B or visit your local DMV office.

Is it against the law to operate a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol?

Yes. New York State has laws that prohibit the operation of a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. More information is available from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. On April 1, 1999, the Zero Tolerance Law for vessel operators became effective.

How can I find more information about boating laws and boating safety?

The New York State Boater's Guide is available from the DMV, the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, or the NYS Canal Corporation. This handbook contains information about registrBuying a small boat without papers?
best bet would be to contact your local DOT to see what you would need to register the boat and get your seasonal tag. Maybe you can do it with just a bill of sale.Buying a small boat without papers?

  • Minn Kota trolling motor problem?

Hi I have a 24 volt 65lb thrust maxxumm minn Kota.

It seems to have become a "battery eater" the batteries only last about half a day. Instead of a day and a half.

I have tested the batteries and load checked them the batteries are fine is there anything that would cause this troller to start doing this????Minn Kota trolling motor problem?
Corrosion on the plug/socket or battery terminals, anywhere there is a connection. Dirt/grime in the motor switches.

Fishing line wound around the prop.

As motors age, parts wear down, they get less efficient. A brush kit might help.

Guess you could have got some water into the motor housing, that'd be bad.

Boats gain weight. (Owners add accessories, foam gets saturated, people get heavier).

Damage or deformity to the prop would make a difference.

    Change in your fishing habits?

The magnitude of the change you're describing, the motor's amp draw has increased by a magnitude of 3.........wonder why you aren't tripping a circuit breaker? Are the wires or switches heating up?

I'm not sure just how well a load test (the kind you can get at a car parts store) really predicts battery performance in this application. As batteries age, obviously they aren't going to perform like new right up until they fail.Minn Kota trolling motor problem?
are you using deep cycle type batteries? also the load of the boat and gear may be excessive. for operation in calm water, it takes about 5 lbs. of thrust per 365 lbs. of boat and gear to operate normal.

    Jon boat HP capacity?

so i have a 1971 ouachita jon boat that i use for fishing on decent sized lakes in the area, and the max horsepower that the information plate says the boat will safely take is a 7HP. so the question is, i have seen/heard about many people using motors larger than this on comparable boats safely, so i was wondering if either: my info plate is outdated (its from 1971 as i said, codes may have changed etc) or if theres a difference in these boats that others are using with larger motors. im not trying to be some kind of speed demon or something out on a little fishing lake, but its just annoying when i look for a larger outboard motor (using a minn kota trolling motor for now) that i have to stick in the lower HP range, which tends to be more expensive when usedJon boat HP capacity?
It is not reasonable to think that after 40 years your hull has increased in strength, and if the builder saw fit to rate the transom for up to 7 hp that would suggest that is what the boat was built to handle. While you could get away with a larger engine for a short time, you will find that the transom area will suffer damage or complete failure very quickly should you use the boat loaded and with a bit of rough weather. And in many parts of the world you can find your insurance voided and even have fines imposed regarding the over-powering of vessels. In general any authority will revert back to the manufacturers recommended hp and load ratings - and if a hull appears in poor order the default position will be to simply declare the vessel unseaworthy at all.

Probably today caution would suggest a 5 or 6 hp engine. With a fair bit of effort you could have the transom strengthened, but the hull itself was never built to handle pounding and high speed impacts, so the potential to split or buckle the hull is simply forced elsewhere on the structure. If you are not happy with the speed, purchase a hull and engine package that is rated for the higher speeds you desire.

The other boats you see may have been built of heavier material, and will have additional bracing and support for larger outboards, greater loadings and rougher conditions.

Edit - there is no way that a 40 would not rapidly damage your hull, as you have already noted the ones built for that power are far heavier and more robust to cope with the additional speeds and loadings.Jon boat HP capacity?
These are safety ratings and current ones might even more stringy. Know do note that a 7 HP modern 4-cycle motor weighs a lot mor than an old 2-cycle. I don't know of any 7 hp OB's but I would assume that if you don't load your boat to it's maximum with crew and gear that you could use a 8.8 HP without to much danger keeping an eye on your free-board when underway at all speeds, I would not use a 4-cycle over the stated HP limit. I'm not saying 8.8 is OK as it would be against good boating practices.

    Installing new trolling motor?

Installing a Minn-Kota Terrova 24V 80lb. thrust trolling motor. Just wondering if the 60 amp circuit breaker they recommend will be to heavy. I'm running 8 gauge wire at a length of about 10' after all the twists and turns from battery to the 10 gauge wire leads installed on motor (via plug %26amp; receptacle),for easy removal My main question is the 60amp circuit breaker compatible with 8 gauge wire. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, as I am no electrician by any meansInstalling new trolling motor?
Yeah, you will be fine. I cannot see the cataclysmic load that would trip the thing, but I've done rigging and repair work on literally hundreds of these installations that had NO circuit protection and more hundreds with a 40,60, or 100 amp breaker all without any problems. Feel the #8 wires after running the motor for a long stretch...if they're hot, go bigger. (I used 4-0 on mine)

    BobInstalling new trolling motor?
They recommend a 60 amp breaker because that's the peak current draw of the motor. Go any lower and the breaker will trip.

The question you should be asking is, will 8 gauge wire carry 60 amps without burning up. google wire gauge amp capacity or something like that.Installing new trolling motor?
60 amp breaker is good but I think 6ga wire would do better than your 8ga. Check out the chart here http://powerupco.com/technical/24VWireSi鈥?/a>

The 8ga is not recommended for any distance with a 50 amp load (2% or 5% loss chart)

Where can I buy a really cheap trolling motor battery??? Please answer. I need this fast!?

Im about to buy a Minn Kota Endura 30. It is like 110 bucks. It is only for a canoe, so I dont want anything bigger. My problem is that I dont want to end up paying like 100 bucks for a battery, because that is how much the motor costs!!!! Thank you so much! An easy 10 pts!Where can I buy a really cheap trolling motor battery??? Please answer. I need this fast!?
If your electric trolling motor is your only means of power I suggest carrying a spare as well. Do not go cheap. You need a marine deep cycle. If you keep your batteries charged and in good condition they will last you 4 to 5 years. By going cheap with no backup battery you can be left stranded. This may not be a big deal on a calm day but can be life threatening in rough weather.
If you are looking for an decent inexpensive battery for a trolling motor go check wal-mart,auto zone a or chain store. You can buy an everstart at wal-mart any where form 60 to 100 plus depending on the size. It all depends on how long you want to use your trolling motor for and or what else you are running off the the battery. PS don't forget the charger.Where can I buy a really cheap trolling motor battery??? Please answer. I need this fast!?
Do yourself a favor and buy the right kind of battery. You will be glad you did. Get an "OPTIMA" deep cycle battery. They are the ones that look like a 6 pack. They are sealed so it can't leak, and are way stronger than anything else out there. I'm sorry, but they are about $100, if not a little more. Good luck, and happy fishing!

  • Need help choosing inflatable fishing boat with room for 4?

hi so far i am looking at the sevylor fish hunter 360 (12ft model) , the intex seahawk II , and the intex excursion 5. i dont have a lot of money nor the room to store a REAL boat so ive narrowed my search down to these three (unless somebody has a better suggestion that is). i will be fishing a local lake maybe once a month. it'll have to support up to 4 adults at times ( 5'8-6ft 170-200lb-ish dudes) i plan to add a ply wood floor with a layer of foam and outdoor carpet, and a 30-36 thrust minn kota trolling motor. any opinions on which boat / raft to go with will be greatly appreciated. i am already thinking i might need to haul a small el cheapo walmart raft on the side to hold the ice chest and some grear.Need help choosing inflatable fishing boat with room for 4?
INTEXNeed help choosing inflatable fishing boat with room for 4?
I would try www.froogle.comNeed help choosing inflatable fishing boat with room for 4?
the inexpensive inflatable boats are much smaller than you think. while they may be rated for 4 people (by definition a person equals 150#) so is only rated for 3 200# people. here is the bad news, by the time you add tackle boxes fishing poles, oars etc, you will be lucky to have room for 2 people to fish. these are not designed as a 4person fishing boat. please take some time and read the reviews. while advertised as rugged boats, they are not, they puncture easily, and only last up to a couple of seasons. these boats should only be used on small protected ponds and lakes.

the design of the intex looks better for sitting and fishing.

here one to look at it already has a reinforced floor and better reviews, motor mount is $69.00 extra

    http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa鈥?/a>

if you want to have room for 4 people to fish, get a second inflatable.

    hope this helps
    WOW man...

I laughed at your question and explanation - as it brought back memories of fishing with friends in an inflatable. It was crowded, hectic, but fun. Problem was, it didn't last long. One of my friends caught a huge catfish, and as he was reeling it in - and lifting its head out of the water - wouldn't you know that fish slammed into the side of that inflatable "fin first". We (and all our gear) sank as fast and hard as we were laughing...

    Anyway, here are my thoughts:

    1. why buy a boat (or any kind) if the first thing you plan to do with it, is turn it into something it isn't? Add plywood floor, flotation foam, and carpet?

I don't think that is a good thing. Instead, just buy an "unsinkable hard bottom" dinghy (inflatable) you won't need the plywood, you won't need the foam, and you won't need the carpet.

So. . . my point is - there are great boats out there both new and used, and there are many - many of them. Look around and get one that fits your needs, not one you immediately have to mess around with making corrections or adaptions to.

Believe me, I live a-board full-time, I build boats, and I have seen people try to make all kinds of these "modifications" to existing production boats - and most of them (especially the ones that involve the hull, flooring, or deck) fail miserably.

At once a month fishing trips and no space to keep a boat - you guys might be better off getting yourselves (each) a fishing kayak, or simply renting a pontoon fishing boat... as for the ice chest - forget the el cheapo raft. Take your ice chest to the tire store and get an inner tube that fits around it - air that baby up real tight - and that ice chest will not only stay upright - it isn't going anywhere without the inner tube. We do this on white water river trips and never lost one yet. In fact, we not only store I beverage in there, we put out wallets and cameras in Ziploc bags and put them in there as well, and just tow it about 6 feet behind us.

    Happy and Safe Boating,

How can fix this trolling motor?

ThanksHow can fix this trolling motor?
dont know the unit in question but if it's rated 2 hp %26amp; 48 volt it will draw something like 30 amps full power. A rheostat ( or pot) that can handle this sort of current will need to be as big as your head, cost a couple of hundred dollars, get hot %26amp; waste a lot of your battery power as heat.

The solenoid is easy to test. there will be continuity between two of the terminals - apply 12volt ( or it may be 48) across these two %26amp; there should be a click or clunk noise as the contacts pull in giving you continuity across the other two terminals.

Be very careful doing any tests using a car or deep cycle battery as a power source - they can produce very high currents when shorted %26amp; make excellent arc welders for a few seconds, especially at 48 volt.

Has anyone used/would recommend this boat motor?

It's the Minn Kota Endura, 12 volt, 30 lb. thrust motor. I would be putting it on a 12 foot fishing boat. The reviews on Amazon are "ehh" so I figured I'd try the yahoo community, since their input is usually better. I have a link if anyon wants to see it:

My uncle has the same model on a 10' plastic two man boat. I don't think he's ever had any problems with it. 30lb. will be plenty for a 12' boat. His will run for around 3 hours on a group size 27 deep cycle.

Everyone has their favorites based on what they have had luck with. Personally I've never liked Minn Kota's much. The main reason is that they seem to go through a battery charge quicker than most. I've had Minn Kota's, Motorguide's, %26amp; OMC's and Motorguide has always been my favorite. I have Motorguide's on both of my current boats, but like I said it's personal preference.Has anyone used/would recommend this boat motor?
MinnKotas are typically good trolling motors, the only thing I remember that's not so good is that there was a model that had a recall last year, but MinnKota sent out a notice to dealers to contact anyone who had purchased one in the specific serial number range to have them bring their motor back in for replacement... something about one of the circuit boards making them overheat or something if I remember correctly. It's the only brand that comes standard on Rangers, I know that much, and I know how much Ranger likes to make sure they have a superior product.

How does a portable charger work?

I have just purchased a minn kota 30lb trolling motor and marine battery. The next step is purchasing a charger. The motor along with the battery will be set up in 12ft inflatable fishing raft. I was looking at the walmart website, and they have many marine battery chargers. I stumbled across a minn kota 5amp portable 12v marine battery charger. How does this work? do i charge the charger and then bring it on the boat and it will charge my battery without haaving to be plugged in? or does it have to be plugged into something? Also, can i plug it into the wall at home and use it as my primary battery charger as well, and then bring it on the boat with me? or is that not a good idea? Basically tell me how this little thing works, and if I were to buy it if it would also eliminate the need for a regular marine battery charger. How does a portable charger work?
My simple answer would be to stay away from it. For your boat and trolling motor, you won't get any use out of a portable or on board charger. Just get you a normal deep cycle battery charger and charge your battery the night before headed out to fish. With a good battery and charger, you shouldn't run into any low battery problems, as long as you charged it fully the night before. Be sure that you get a charger which has different charging settings. Most will have something like a 10 amp charge along with a 2 amp charge. The 2 amp charge is what you need to use when charging your battery for a long period of time, like all night for example. It is a slower but more thorough charge. The 10 amp is a quicker charge but not quite as thorough. 10 amp comes in handy when you are forced to charge your battery for a shorter length of time. If you wake up one day and decide you're going to go fishing in a few hours, charge it with the 10 amp setting.

The portable and on board chargers are best suited for normal boats with outboards on them. Many boats like this have 3 or 4 batteries, which are big and bulky. Therefore, people don't want to haul these things in and out of their boats when not necessary. How does a portable charger work?
Have a' 11' inflatable (Intex Seahawk 500) sporting a' Motor Guide 30lb., thrust and all I do is make sure the battery is at full charge usin' a conventional battery charger before headin' out (charge the battery the night before at 2amps). Also, I'll take along a' "don't leave home without it" goodie ie., battery meter (link) which helps me stay on top of the charge. Your biggest concern is a GOOD Marine type battery. Realize that I didn't help out with the portable but, think I'd take the advice Josh (thumbs) gave ya' and shy away from it %26lt;);-3

    Minn Kota battery meter:

    http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa鈥?/a>

Note: Don't know the size of the portable charger but, keep in mind that them inflatables are limited in room and with the battery sittin' inside along with the portable your goin' to cut down the space in it even more. Might not sound like much but, I can tell ya' personally one wants as much room as they can get in em'. Just food for thought...

I think you mean what we call a "dual-purpose" battery.

And yes, it can be used.

It won't last as long as a single-purpose deep cycle battery, but you may not care.

Discharge is fully and then recharge fully, that will help.

Best of luckDeep cycle "starting" battery.?
If you are only going to use the battery for a trolling motor an AGM type will give the best service. Flattening the battery described will give it a very short life. Any more than 50% discharge is very rough on the battery. A good three stage charger will be an absolute must either way.Deep cycle "starting" battery.?
A typical dual purpose battery has a life expectancy of 200 discharge cycles while a regular deep cycle has 365+. So yes you can use it but don't expect it to last as long as a regular run of the mill deep cycle

I am thinking a 47 lb Minn Kota ought to push it with me and gear fine, but to be honest? I seem to be bleeding $$$ getting this sucker up and running. I am looking for a cost effective way to power this thing without going even deeper in the hole! Any insight or advice will be appreciated.Marine -v- regular battery?
WOW... I have heard of the gift that keeps on giving... but this one, you say... is the gift that keeps on costing... lol

As, I understand it... your "only" motor is a trolling motor...

Then I suggest you get a good (doesn't have to be the very best) deep cycle marine battery - (some are even labeled for trolling). The bad news is...yes, it will cost you a bit more... The good news is, it will probably out last your boat, and at least you won't need another battery.

    Have fun!
if you use a starting battery, everytime you drain it, you will loose some of the charging power that goes back in it. A deep cycle is made to drain to 0 and charge full again, A starting is not, and they say starting batteries can loose up to half of it's charge the first time you kill it. A good deep cycle interstate battery (srm-24) would last you all weekend and cost you under $100. Those mini-kotas only draw around 2 amps running on High, and the srm - 24 is rated for 140 (I think) RC (that means at a 25 amp load, the battery should last 140 minutes) so at a 2 amp load, it should last all day running. Hope this helps!Marine -v- regular battery?
You can use either one. Since this is a small boat you probably won't be using it for hours on end. The others are correct about the marine deep cycle battery being made to discharge fully without damaging the battery. A car battery should last a few hours with no problem.

Marine deep cycle batteries are rated in amp hours, not cranking amps. If you take the amp hours of the battery and divide it by the amps of the motor, that will give you a good idea of how many hours the battery will last.
Deep cycle (marine) batteries are designed to discharge and charge slowly. Using one as a starter battery drains it quicker than it was designed for and will eventually kill it. Starter batteries are designed to put out massive amps for a short time and recharge quickly, but don't hold the amount of amp hours a same sized deep cycle does.Marine -v- regular battery?
you could use either. you would have to change the battery connectors to fit an auto battery if it does not have posts. isn't going to hold a charge well if you use it on the trolling motor.

BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand. lol.
i know years ago in minnesota we used car batteries but now i live in fl u need a mariene one its sealed more cranking amps not to give off spark but u are not going to have a engine so it wont matter good luck
either will work the marine would hold a charge longer

It seems unlikely that two different "controls" are not working. The problem might be else where, but a trained technician is more likely to understand and fix the problem.

    Trolling motor battery?

I just bought a Minn Kota 36 # thrust Trolling Motor and I plan on using it on my small bass fishing boat. I want to use it as the primary motor, meaning I wont have a gas motor. My boat is only 9' so I didnt bother getting a large motor. So now I am wondering what kind of battery should I get? I would like it to last from sun up to sun down. I have a really nice battery charger made for deep cell batteries already.Trolling motor battery?
Get the biggest battery money will allow as Dumdum said, a decent sized reserve time is a good thing as well. Don't make the same mistake I did a few years back by getting a deep cycle starting battery. I used it for about 2 weeks for 6-8 hours just fine but soon after it wouldn't run but about 2 hours. I took it in to have it tested and they quickly pointed out it was a starting battery. Dumb mistake on my part not paying attention.Trolling motor battery?
    Personally I use Optima batteries, if ya' decide on one you'll want the Blue Top Marine Deep Cycle. Understand that Auto Zone carries the Duralast, which have heard are pretty good and has a' more affordable co$t to them then the Optima. Whatever battery you decide on I might suggest, especially when your primary source of power is an electric troller ~ handheld battery meter/tester (link). It'll keep you in charge of the charge;)...Hope ya' find somethin' soon ie., temps/weather are changin' which = good weather;)... %26lt; * { {{ %26gt; %26lt;

Buy the largest deep cycle marine battery available . It will last you from daylight to dark provided you use in in normal stop and go fishing. Use it on the lowest power setting that will allow you to fish effectively. If you hold it down in high and never let up on it you may go 3-4 hours.

What size trolling motor should i go for... 30lbs to 55lbs thrust? 1980's coleman crawdad approx 11-12 feet

i'm looking to redo this boat as i only use it on small lakes/ponds it should do fine. the gas motor that i previously used no longer runs. i'm looking for something that will let this boat cruise easily around with some decent battery life. the motors that i'm looking at are minn kota endura 30/36/55.What size trolling motor should i go for... 30lbs to 55lbs thrust? 1980's coleman crawdad approx 11-12 feet
I'd recommend a 36 or higher. Keep in mind at the top speed setting the battery life of an average deep cycle battery will only be about 2 hours. You might get a little more time out of top-of-the-line deep cycle batteries (like the Batteries Plus Optima). I'd suggest getting two batteries (make sure they're deep cycle batteries, regular car batteries will drain much, much faster) and hooking them in parallel. This will double the time you can spend on the water. What size trolling motor should i go for... 30lbs to 55lbs thrust? 1980's coleman crawdad approx 11-12 feet
For this size. For a gas motor, about a 3-5 hp will do just fine. For a trolling motor a 35 lb would be fine. But if you want to troll a bit faster, a 55 will be just fineWhat size trolling motor should i go for... 30lbs to 55lbs thrust? 1980's coleman crawdad approx 11-12 feet
Get the 55...the drain on the battery is only slightly more but the thrust is noticeably better and you can always run it on a lower speed to conserve. Also, go to Sears and get a good MARINE DEEP CYCLE trolling battery (approx cost $80.00)....make sure you don't get a cranking battery. If you charge it every time you come back from going out you'll get a good 3-4 years use from it....never store it directly on concrete!! Tight Lines!!

PS: I run a Sears Die Hard battery on the front trolling motor of my boat which is a motorguide 42 lb thrust and I can go 10 hours or more on a fully charged battery...if you only get 2 hours you are doing something wrong!

Whats the ideal size trolling motor for a 16' aluminum Crestliner?........?

Hi, just bought a 01' Crestliner Angler series fishing boat with a 35hp Johnson. Looking into a bow-mount remote trolling motor.......Currently have a little 50lbs thrust minn kota, just wondering if its worth my money to sell that one and trade up to a bow mount?......any feedback would be appreciated....thanks!Whats the ideal size trolling motor for a 16' aluminum Crestliner?........?
hey man, since you have that 35 on the back then i would say yes, makes things a little easier when fishing from the front. if the one you have a tiller control. if so until you get another one if you want just take out the bolt that holds the head on the motor and spin the head around and reinsert the bolt. and mount it on the front. that is what i did with my troll, i hope to one day get a foot controlled troll but untill then i just use my tiller controlled until then. it works just find with the head turned around. hope that helps you a bit good luck god fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

  • Can electric motor go on this boat?

    http://www.directboats.com/bic245.html

I just purchased a 55 lbs thrust minn kota motor and i was concerned that i wouldn't work on this boat....and OVERALL I NEED HELP INSTALLING IT, and if i need to buy a charger..which one?Can electric motor go on this boat?
your bic 245 is a good dingy it is rated for up to a 4hp motor so your electric motor will work but the total weight of the motor and battery will need to be considered in the total weight cap of your boat. (3 people/551 lbs)

here is a copy of the bic 245 owners manual that should answer your questions.

    http://www.bicsportboats.com/images/Manu鈥?/a>

the boat comes with a motor mount on the stern of the boat, it should be easy to clamp the motor onto the stern motor mount. for boat balance you may want to carry the battery near the bow of the boat.

as far as which charger to buy, it depends on what type of deep cycle battery you have. but i would suggest that you purchace a good quality charger that will automatically charge your battery. this type of charger is capable of charging all types of batteries including gel, adm and wet cell.

Electric trolling motor cables getting HOT at battery?

I use a 30 lb thrust minn kota on a coleman crawdad. after a while the cables get real hot around the clips. I have replaced the clips and have a good connection. brand new battery also. any ideas??Electric trolling motor cables getting HOT at battery?
You need to trash the quick clips %26amp; install a HD connector to the bolts with wing nuts.
frayed wire at the clip cut 1foot off and reattachElectric trolling motor cables getting HOT at battery?

    motor issues.
Buy thicker clamps. (heavy duty) from a welding supply shop. Its just the weak point in the loop. Or use automotive post clamps the greater contact area will reduce heat from having high resistance.Electric trolling motor cables getting HOT at battery?
Get rid of clamps and use standard battery cable clamps or ring terminals. Depending on how long a run of wires to motor from battery determines the thickness of cable.

Remember the longer the run the thicker the wire .If your battery is in the back you should try running standard gauge battery cable to motor . I have seen 10 gauge wire work but make sure your connections are tight and clean
Like some others have alluded to... its probably the connection. You have to consider that while you may have large wire and everything looks good you might not be making an appropriate connection at the terminal. When you use larger wire it is to gain more surface area to Carry the current (that's why stranded wire is better than solid wire because it gives you more over all surface area). If your connection is only making contact in a few spots on the terminal then you may be reducing the amount of SURFACE area in contact with the terminal and that will definitely cause it to heat up. Its like the old saying " Your only as strong as your weakest link" ....well your cables are only as strong as the amount of surface area in contact with the terminals.
Yep, they are right, the connection is not capable of carrying the amouunt of electricity you need, it is sorta like trying to run a sprinkler off too small of hose except the hose doesnt heat up.
The wires heat up because of the load being put on the battery. I have a 24 volt system and the wires get warm from the constant use when I'm fishing. You can check to see that you don't have any fishing twine around the shaft. This will run your wires hot and the switch inside of the control head. My brother just replaced his 2 weeks ago for the same problem. Good luck hope this helps
check the connections make sure they are trated for the amperage of the battery

check prop for bing or stiffness

45 foot lbs??? that would be more than enough, unless you and your friends are really fat. Just messing wit ya. A 36 ft lbs trolling motor is normal for that size boat. you can use a 20 ft lbs trolling motor, it wont get around fast but the battery lasts longer. If your 20 hp is electric start it will charge the battery some while running, but not much. If you want to run 24 volts then that takes TWO 12 volt batteries in series. I had that largest Minikota trolling motor and I don't seem to remember it could run on 24 volts.. the one I had did have a socket on the front but was just for a remote control. Be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN your model will run on 24 volts or you will have a nice fire and a ruined motor if it isn'tConvert 12v trolling motor to a 24v?
Don't worry, if it's a 24V motor, just get two batteries connected in series, you can use the same plug.

  • Gps fish finder and trolling motor?

I want to upgrade my trolling motor to a minn Kota with ipilot and my fish finder with one that has gps. Now I hear you can hook the motor to the fish finder. What would be the benefit of doing this? Since I can plot routes with the ipilot remote is a fish finder with gps even necessary?Gps fish finder and trolling motor?
I'm not familiar with the Ipilot stuff, but I'm guessing that it's not an actual GPS enabled thing, right? If I'm not mistaken, you can just plot routes around certain areas of water, as you said. While that is nice, it won't give you the benefits of an actual GPS unit. The great thing about having a GPS enabled finder is the fact that you can mark very specific spots. For example, you may run into a certain section of a lake with a deep drop off, point, or just a large brush pile. With a GPS, you can mark this specific spot, so you don't forget where it was at. There have been more than a few times when I wished I had a GPS enabled depth finder because of this. Sometimes, there is one brush pile that holds A LOT of fish, but cruising around with a non GPS unit trying to pin-point it can take up a lot of fishing time.

I would have to think they would be great to have throughout the summer as well. In my area, we normally experience at least one fairly significant drought during the summer. This lowers lake levels a lot, which shows you some underwater structure that you normally wouldn't see. Again, marking these specific areas down with a GPS will greatly play to your advantage.

Need answers for a few questions for new boat!?

I am purchasing a Lund 1750 Outfitter with either a 40 or 50 horsepower motor.

I need to know how to determine what thrust on a trolling motor i need. I was thinking the new Minn Kota Terrovora 80/AP or the PowerDrive V2 70/AP? Im not sure if that is too much thrust?

Another question is what motor a two or four stroke and what brand?

Thanks in advanceNeed answers for a few questions for new boat!?
HI you will get many many answers as to which motor and the pros and cons of 2 v 4 stroke.

I have had Johnsons, evinrudes, Mercurys and a Mariner.

Two and 4 strokes. Which did i prefer... Well... all had goo points all had bad points..

For example I had a 150 hp merc new 2006 and a new 2006 15 hp merc as a kicker. Both never had a problem.. Both were new and serviced regularly. Thats the important thing make sure you service them and follow all the recomendations.

I have had a 1965 johnson 25hp... it ran like new. Because it had been maintained. The evinrude was a pig at first... and needed a few new parts but then with regular maintainance it was great.

I know have a 1972 Johnson 50hp on a old sportcraft. Its getting there but i have had to work on it but the work has been easy because its a two stroke and lots of help available. on the internet.

It doesnt really matter in my view as to which is the best motor its basically what service can you expect.... there are more marinas that work on two strokes than 4 strokes. I was told that by a Mercury dealer. 4 strokes tend to be a little more expensive to repair. and require more fewent services.

But they run cleaner and are more economical on gas.

So basically go with the motor that suits your needs. Go with the larger HP you will not have to run it at full throttle ( WOT wide open throttle) to maintan the same speed as you would with a 40 hp. Also you will use be putting less strain on the motor too....

As per trolling motor ... go for the largest thrust you can afford.. You may not need the top end all the time but you can always use the extr thrust if your main motor dies in the water at least the hight thrust trolling motor will get you back to the ramp....

Good luck with your purchase and remember what the term BOAT means.... Break Out Another Thousand.....Need answers for a few questions for new boat!?
You shouldn't have a problem with too much thrust because trolling motors have multiple power settings. If it's too much, turn it down a notch. I have a 17-52 aluminum jon boat and a motorguide trolling motor with 55 lbs of thrust and it is more than enough for me. I'd go 4 stroke Yamaha or Mercury.Need answers for a few questions for new boat!?
Go with the 50, in 35 years of boating I have never heard somebody say "I have too much power."

Same with the trolling motor, go with the bigger. Turn it down if need be, and you will find it uses less power on the low settings.

My favorite outboard right now is the 4-stroke Yamaha.
First rig the boat with the max or at least close to the max rating of the boat. This makes resale easier down the road, nobody wants to buy a package and then have to re power it.

Now as to 2 or 4 stoke; power to weight ratio is much better with a 2 stroke, and generally cost apx.10 to 20% less than a 4 stroke.

The 4 stroke is MUCH more envirmently freindly and quieter.Plus the government regs are soon forcing manufactures to faze out two strokes altogether.

Two strokes are cheaper to service,(no engine oil filter or engine oil)

Ultimitly it is a personal choice.Just keep in mind availably of service and parts, not just where you boat now but if you take a trip etc.,both Merc and OMC have extencive dealer networks.

Do i need to register a trolling motor for my canoe? (New Hampshire)?

No. And its the boat, or kayak, or canoe that you register, not the motor. The only time when you have to register any vessel is when you put a gasoline engine on it.

At least that's the way it works in California.Do i need to register a trolling motor for my canoe? (New Hampshire)?
In my state, if you use paddles, no reg. needed. if motorized need reg. you'll have to check with your state

putting an electric motor on a canoe is fun but it won't steer that good unless you have a stern mount or it helps if you have someone up frontDo i need to register a trolling motor for my canoe? (New Hampshire)?
in kansas oklahoma and texas, ANY motorized vessel has to be registered. even float tubes with trolling motor mounts. the float tube has to be registered.

Is it 19' or 20? 55 lbs of thrust is not going to be enough -- you won't make much headway in any kind of wind at all. Pretty sure you're looking at a 24V motor at least, 70 lbs sounds about right. Shaft length, you need enough to submerge the lower unit by a good 10" at least.

I really need to know if this charger i just bought will work with this electric motor. PLEASE HELP

    Motor-Minn Kota庐 Endura鈩?55 Transom - mount 12V 55 lb. Thrust Trolling Motor

Charger-http://www.blackanddecker.com/ProductGuide/Product-Details.aspx?ProductID=23435Does this charger work with this electric motor?
That charger appears to be useful for any battery group you care to throw at it - from a motorcycle battery up to industrial earthmoving starter batteries and everything in between.

Unless you have batteries specifically designed to take 40 amps in you would get very good results with the lower settings, typically one tenth of the rated capacity (i.e. 200 A/hr battery will love a 20 amp rate, but 40 amps is a bit too brutal for most construction types) or less will give a better charge and less potential damage.

You should have no problems with this unit, just use it per the instructions - should there be any issues you can be confident that Black and Decker are very good at supporting their products.

I think it is an excellent unit for the home workshop. For long term connection it may well be worth buying small dedicated maintenance chargers - simply because you will find the big unit so useful elsewhere from time to time I predict.....

Good luck.Does this charger work with this electric motor?
Considering it is a rather large and costly way of recharging your battery it will work fine, But I would recommend that you use a deep cycle battery for your motor as they will last longer , and you use a smaller slow charger. The actual charger you are looking at is a quick charger for standard automotive type batteries and really has nothing to do with the trolling motor. The motor runs off the battery not the charger. It would be impossible to use an extension cord from shore to the boatDoes this charger work with this electric motor?
The Electric motor doesn't require a charger the battery does 12 volt at least a 10 Amp. Use a good deep cycle battery 27 or 31 group.

Modify 12v trolling motor to 24v? Will it burn out?

I have the Minn Kota PowerMax 36 12v trolling motor and would like to modify it to 24v simply bu using 2 12v batteries. Will the motor burn out? Does anyone have any ideas on this?Modify 12v trolling motor to 24v? Will it burn out?
Hook the batteries in parallel - the available power will be doubled without an increase in the voltage - 24 volts will surly turn the motor windings into toast - and in a very short time.Modify 12v trolling motor to 24v? Will it burn out?
This is sheer speculation on my part, but I think you could get good results from 2 batteries in series, with a voltage regulator set at 13.5 volts. No higher than 14 volts for sure. Your run time will no doubt be shorter than if you connected the batts in parallel, but I think the motor would do better on a clean consistent voltage. Fully charged 12V battery is 12.65, new batterys are usually upwards of 13.

BTW, the parallel connection requires 2 identical batteries, matched as to construction, capacity and age. Otherwise the weaker will drain the stronger. But, it gives you more than the combined run time you'd get from the 2 batteries separately, because each is drained more slowly (google "peukert effect"). If you discharge 'em in parallel, best to recharge 'em that way.Modify 12v trolling motor to 24v? Will it burn out?
Leanne is correct you can run them parallel which is done by hooking the batteriws up positive to positive then negative to negative this will give you longer run time on your trolling motor. If you need more power get a bigger pound thrust trolling motor.
A 12 volt motor will give lots of power with 24 volts for about 5 minutes. The power will be out standing. But will burn up, maybe even catch fire.

How fast can a 30 lbs thrust push a 12 ft. Jon Boat?

Specifically the Minn Kota庐 Endura鈩?Transom-Mount Motor. How fast can a 30 lbs thrust push a 12 ft. Jon Boat?
you have to know the drag of the boat, which includes weight and shape of the hull. There is a formula, however, suffice it to say, a 30lb thrust electric motor, running at full throttle, with a full charge will push an average flat bottom boat at between 4mph and 12mph.How fast can a 30 lbs thrust push a 12 ft. Jon Boat?
Not very fast if current or wind about like oars. In some cases.

    What is the difference between?

A salt water electric outboard and a fresh water electric outboard and what is needed to be done if a fresh water electric outboard is used in the salt prior to and after a trip out.

Looking at the baby classic minn kota 28 for my 3 meter hobie sport.(KAYAK)What is the difference between?
    just a good clean
the only thing i would do is if you use in salt water make sure you wash it off after you get home.but you can use them in salt water or fresh water.no difference. What is the difference between?
Well the main reason is that a fresh water motor is generally not as powerful as a salt water motor because not as much power is needed in fresh water as it is in say a rough sea swell also salt water motors are bigger in size as well as propeller size and generally coated in a salt resistant paint. What i would say is just give it a good clean with concentrated detergent if you have been in saltwater.
Don't know if it would be different with the exception, that saltwater is corrosive as h _ _ l, and I'd give it a thorough cleanin' after each use in the salt. That be the only concerns, I would think I'd have ;)...

NOTE: Gathering from your Additional Details, I'm so sorry I didn't have the correct answer that you were wantin' and it looks like other Answers ppl fell short of your needs as well... Maybe try the neighborhood street corner next time!? NOWwwww, on a more positive side, Answers people and there be a lot of them, I'm sure will be able ta' set you straight on the, "answer that your after" ;( !What is the difference between?
Should be not problem using the motor in either fresh or salt water, but as others have already stated, a good cleaning and rinse after use in salt water is required. Also check the owners manual as to any servicing, greasing and oiling they recommend. You may want to do this more often with salt water use.

There is a product called Salt X that is very good. Spray it on prior to use, then again after your final fresh water rinse and let dry. Helps to remove salt and forms a protective barrier on metal surfaces. Good to use on reels or any equipment exposed to salt water. For about $12.00 you can get a bottle of concentrate that will make 55 gal.

Additional info, check out the Minn Kota web site. The motor you are looking at is recommended for fresh water use. A comparison between fresh and salt water motors shows 2 improvements that the salt water models have, and those are related to corrosion protection. The salt water motors have a sacrificial anode made of zinc that will corrode protecting the other metal components from electrolysis and damage. The other difference is improved anti corrosion coatings on critical components for use in salt water. You are correct that the thrust ratings do not come into play.

Again if you want to use a fresh water motor in salt water, it can be done, but requires extra care and maint. just as everyone has already stated. Even a good motor built for salt water will turn into a pile of scrap metal if not properly cared for.
THE SALT WATER TROLLING MOTOR HAS ANODES ON IT SO THE SALT WATER ATTACKS THAT INSTEAD OF THE MOTOR HOUSING YOU MAY BE ABLE TO BOLT SOME ON TO HELP IT LAST LONGER BUT YOU HAVE TO FLUSH IT FULLY AFTER A SALT WATER USE CHECK OUT MINN KOTAS WEB SITE

i have seen your trolling motor sell for around $200 is it is in working condition.

I am thirteen years old and im an exteme good bass fisher. I want to get sponsored by a good company .?

I am very good at bass fishing. I'm only thirteen and i want to get sponsored how can i get sponsored by like minn kota or yamamoto. or any other good companyI am thirteen years old and im an exteme good bass fisher. I want to get sponsored by a good company .?
Honestly, those companies are not even going to look at you. I suggest you do some leg work and get some smalltime sponsorships from local businesses in your area, (Dan's Auto Shop, Billy's Bait %26amp; Tackle, etc) enter some fishing tournaments and work your way to the big league. Best of luck to you, hope to see you on TV in a few years!I am thirteen years old and im an exteme good bass fisher. I want to get sponsored by a good company .?
There's people who will have better answers because they have sponsors, BUT....

Start out fishing little local tournaments, you need to get a name for yourself, and a pile of photos with you with fish "recreationally" doesn't do the same thing as having actual tournaments under your belt. Save your winnings from the little toureys to pay for bigger tourneys and start talking to people. Don't rule out local businesses. I work at a Ranger dealership, I've met a few people who have some good sponsors, but also have sponsors from right here in my little nothing town.I am thirteen years old and im an exteme good bass fisher. If you want to get sponsored at anything, you need to understand how the system works.

A company sponsors someone because they believe they can get a return on their investment. The basic idea is they hope that when fishermen see a pro using their products, the fishermen will then be influenced to purchase these products themselves, thus increasing sales.

So for a company to sponsor you, they would have to beleive that your skills and reputation are such that you can influence other fisherman to buy and improve the companys profits.

Regardless of how good you are, it won't matter if no one knows who you are. There are some amazing athletes playing basketball in parks in new york city, yet they don't have the big shoe contract like NBA players, because the only people who know how good they are are the locals.

Like the others said, you need to do two main things.

One, increase your visibility. Enter every tournament you can, and it goes without saying, you will need to do well. So you will need to work on every part of your skill set. Its not enough to just be a good fisherman- you need to learn about the science of the water chemistry, how temperatures affect the fishing, learning everything you can about the sport- I assure you the real pros do, and they are your competition.

The second thing is networking- make friends with everyone you can at fishing shops, bait stores, boat dealers, anyone who works in the fishing industry. the idea is to create a network of people who can talk you up by word of mouth, and also maybe help you out with small sponsorship, which may lead to bigger deals.

Its great you are starting so young, but the most important thing you will need is some patience. It may take awhile. Work hard, have fun, and good luck.
i say go for it. that's the kind of job that America is famous for. hard work and a education heek yea. go for that fishing deal. once you get sponsored you will make more that doctors or social workers who save lives and help people. good luck mate.

Trolling motor battery cables too short, need an extension?

i recently purchased a 30lb minn-kota trolling motor and would like to increase the distance between it and my marine battery. could someone point me in the direction of a website that sells some sort of extension cable? or would i need to completely rewire the motor with a new custom cable?Trolling motor battery cables too short, need an extension?
You can purchase longer battery cables from a good marine store, the larger the gauge the better with less voltage drop. Even welding cables would work. Bolt the cables together at the eye ring or get a crimp or solder connection and use shrink tube on them. If you use large cable, say o gauge it will be like the battery is still close.Trolling motor battery cables too short, need an extension?
In most cases the cable length shouldn't be lengthened. Nor should you use the same battery for other boat systems. It should have it's own battery located near to the motor. Most bass boats have a place to install this battery. You need a Group 27 Deep Cycle Battery (110 Amp.) but a Group 24 90 Amp will also work. I hope this helps.Trolling motor battery cables too short, need an extension?
buy the same gage wire and i would the best copper connectors and crimp and solder them and insulate them real well and use the same color do it right there will be water everywhere but is hard to put out a burning battery cable
the long the run the thicker guage wire u will need or u risk melting the wire.

How does a multimeter indicate a short circuit?

I need to test the foot pedal (which contains a printed circuit board) for my Minn Kota Power Drive bow mount electric motor. The plug has eight connections, designated A thru H in the reapir manual. The manual says that I should set my multimeter to the X1 scale and the meter should indicate short from A to G, from A to F, from E to F, etc. ( See page 3-4 http://www.konett.com/Minn Kota/Minn Kota Service Information 2004P/RepairManual/Repair Manual.pdf)

What am I looking for on the multimeter? Should the reading be 0? (I assume I should touch one probe to A and the other to G, or one to A and the other to F, etc.)How does a multimeter indicate a short circuit?
    1) Set the multimeter to reat OHMS, not voltage...

    2) Touch the red and black lead of the multimeter and adjust the meter to zero ohms at lowest ohm setting ( 1X)

    3) with NO voltage applied to unit (unplugged) follow instructions... a short circuit will be indicated with a Zero reading... or about zero.

    4) And yes, you assume right..one lead to one point, the other lead to the other point

    5) make sure the battery in the mulitmeter is new or is at least working...nothing will happen if the battery is dead! IF you cannot "zero" the meter with the leads touching, the battery is dead.

Good Luck, GoldwingHow does a multimeter indicate a short circuit?
Shorts in a electrical circuit will blow fuses since a short is the uncontrolled flow of electrons, like when you touch a live wire to ground and see that blue flash that is a short and it will trip a breaker fast. Circuit boards are hard to troubleshoot since to check the components you need to remove them from the board and check then put back on the board. Shorts in a circuit on a meter have no resistance using the Rx1 scale. Remove all wires to this board so you do not get back feed Thur the other circuits. Shorts in circuit boards will in most cases leave a burn mark. How does a multimeter indicate a short circuit?
If the meter is reading resistance, make SURE that the device is unplugged before you start. A short means that two (or more) wires are touching each other where they shouldn't, so there will be little or no resistance (where there should be). The meter sends a small current from it's battery, and measures how much trouble (resistance) it runs into.

That's the opposite of an open circuit, where you would be looking for a broken wire (lots of resistance).
When you test your circuit, if you find that your meter indicates from 0 to about 5 ohms, you most likely have a short circuit. To simulate what a short circuit looks like on your meter, touch the black and red terminals together, your meter should indicate 0. If you get the same ( or close) result when you test the circuit, it is shorted out.

I do not no how to use a foot pedal on my trolling motor please help?

We just got a new trolling motor the minn kota all terain 40 pound thrust and it has a foot pedal control i have no clue how to use it please help.I do not no how to use a foot pedal on my trolling motor please help?
Hi mate, Best way is put it all together and on the boat, go out in some really calm protected area and play. spend a couple of hours with it and you will fine tune your foot movements and the ways to operate it and have it down to a fine art before you know it. best way, thats what i did when i first got one. just go and play with it out of everybodies way. Believe me , you will surprise yourself.I do not no how to use a foot pedal on my trolling motor please help?
do you have the instruction book that came with it? press the pedal up for straight forward, and down for backwards, to familiarize yourself with it when you move your foot around on it,.. right for turning right,...to the left side of the pad for left turn, etc.make sure it is faced in the correct direction on the floor of the boat facing the front of the boat if that's where the motor is put.like the hands of a clock it should move the boat where you move your foot to.You could stop at the marina if you still have trouble, see if it's a problem in the wires if you can't figure it out they can check it for you.Go to minn kota service center or visit the website for technical support.I do not no how to use a foot pedal on my trolling motor please help?
Assuming that your trolling motor is already mounted on the front of the boat and you have launched the boat and are in the water: Place the pedal in a comfortable postiion for you,. Most people fix the pedal to the deck with screws to hold it firmly in place. Now, pull the cord. This unlocks the hold-down catch. (there may also be a manual clip that you will have to snap off of the shaft to free it for deployment. Lift it up and it will swivel out over the bow and down into the water. It will automatically lock there. On the pedal you may find an off and on switch along with hi and low speed switch. select "on" and "low" to start with. The hi-low may also be a rotating wheel on the side or on top of the pedal. By placing you foot on it you can roll it back and forth to select speed. On the top of your foot pedal, there will also be a push button. This button is called a momentary switch. It operates ONLY when your foot is pressing it down. Place the right side of your foot on the pedal, left side of the foot slightly elevated so as not to push the switch button. The pedal is operated by pushing your foot (and the pedal ) toe down, or heel down. If I remember correctly. Toe down will turn the underwater motor and propeller to go right, and heel down on the pedal will make it go left.(It could be opposite, you will know when you try though) On top of the "head" of the shaft, there should be an indicator arrow which swivels to point left or right as you push toe down or heel down on the foot pedal. The indicator arrow can be either manual or an electronic display. When the arrow is pointed the direction you want to go, keep the pedal in that position with your foot and lean your foot to the left to push the button. Hold it down as long as you want the motor to run. You can push heel or toe down anytime the motor is running to change direction and alter you course. To stop the motor from running, just rotate you foot off of the button and the motor will stop After using it a while, it will become automatc for you to operate it and the boat will just go where you want with little thinking or efrfort on your part. It becomes an extension of you that you don't have to think about it. Be careful about operating in really shallow water or running into submerged rocks, logs, etc-----especially if you are on high. You can damage the shaft of the motor if you hit hard enough. When you want to use your big outboard to move someplace else, pull the cord on the trolling motor and pull---------this will lift the trolling motor up an back onto the deck. Be sure and push it all the way down until it locks. You'll probably hear a click. I always pull up slightly on it to make sure it is locked. Some trolling motors also have clampdowns to hold the motor in place while you are running. You have to snap them on and off. DO NOT RUN YOUR BIG ENGINE WITH THE TROLLING MOTOR IN THE WATER OR UP AND UNLOCKED. A bounce can deploy the trolling motor into the water while you are at high speed. Very Dangerous both to you and the trolling motor. If you have trouble when you get to the lake, just ask any other boater who has a trolling motor on his boat to give you a quick rundown as to how to use yours. Fishermen are friendly people as a general rule and will not hestitate to help if you ask for advice and help. I do hope this helps you with your problem. The instructions I have given you are generic in nature. Every trolling motor has the same features though, and when you get on the water, it won't take long to figure it out. Be careful out there and wear your life jacket anytime the big motor is running and all the time if you don't swim well. Little children should always have life jacket on when near or on the water. Don't let them con you into lettting them take them off. In most states, it is illegal and in all states it is really dumb to take chances with their lives. I see people every day that do that on the water and will not listen to any advice or council. I've also helped recover the bodies of children and fishermen who ignored the lifejacket rule. Don't you be one of them! Be safe and enjoy your boat and pardon me for the sermon. about safety on the water. You probably already knew that, but I have seen so many that didn't I never miss a chance to preach about life jackets. Hope this helped! Oh, and read the instruction manual and locate the motor's features with it's help before you go to the lake. It will become clear to you. It is not difficult at all to operate and steer the trolling moter, but it can be confusing at first until you have a little practice under your belt. You'll be using it like a pro before you know it! Good luck, and catch one for me!
