Could I run a minn kota trolling motor for 3-4 hours with a car, or lawn battery? I have a 16' aluminum boat.?

It's about a 1000 pound boat, and if I were to hook up a car or lawn battery to the trolling motor and fish finder could I use it for about 3-4 hours, and not constantly running it's a small lake.|||Probably not. At one time I had the largest single head Minn Kota on a 2 man Avon Dinghy and a full charge on a big DEEP CYCLE battery would barely last long Eng to get from the mooring into the public dock about a mile away and back. More often than not, coming back with a load of groceries, dry laundry and a couple of bottles of rum, I would have to paddle the last 300 or 400 feet back to the boat|||no.

your car battery is a STARTING battery. its not designed to do more then provide a quick burst of power and then get recharged. it will quickly drain and it will quickly go bad from the abuse.

its also not really designed for the bouncing about that a boat expeinces on the water.

you need a deep cycle marine battery. and it should provide plenty of power for 3-4 hours of constant full speed operation. or longer at lower speeds, before needing recharged.

however, just so you know your options and what you'll get out of them:

a 1,000 lb 16 alum boat (like mine is too) will go about 4 mph (in calm conditions) with a 50 lb thrust trolling motor (which runs about $250+, and requires a 50+ lb $70 battery to power it).

a 1,000 lb 16 alum boat powered instead of a 2.5 hp mercury outboard (about $750 new) has about 250 lbs of thrust, and only weighs 40 lbs. boat will be lighter and with more power, you might actually get 10 mph out of it.

the outboard will burn gas, but very, very little of it.

the trolling motor battery will need recharged pretty much every trip out.

gas is found everywhere, somewhere to plug in for a couple of hours is a bit harder to find.

maintence, lucky if you get 3 or 4 years out of the battery. and you might want two at all times anyways to extend your running time.

the outboard will need fluids and filters every 20 hours, simple enough to DIY. every 100 hours it needs those AND a tune up and impeller, again simple enough to DIY.

long run, the outboard isnt very expensive and will make you much happier.|||We only have a sedan civic so we can't buy a real boat thats why we decided to ... 3. boot cover for the boat itself 4. 30-36lb minnkota trolling motor .... I think these boats come with a couple of oars (2-piece plastic paddle and aluminum ... I'd go with the 12 volt, that you can just hook up to your car battery|||1000 lbs Aluminum 16" boat. The battery needs to be a deep cycle or it won't last long at all.
